This unique cultural event came about like this: Past Sine Nomine director, Joseph Fort brings The Choir of King’s College London to the USA for the first time since 2009, making a stop in New Bedford to reconnect with old friends. The programme for this concert includes British choral favorites by Tallis, Byrd, Tomkins, Parry and Vaughan Williams. 45th Annual Cape Verdean Recognition Parade
SATURDAY, JULY 1 – The Cape Verdean Recognition Parade through New Bedford is a mighty sight to behold. It begins at Rockdale Avenue/Buttonwood Park at 11:00am and makes its way East on Union Street, then south onto County Street, turning east onto Spring Street, south onto Acushnet Avenue, west onto Grinnell Street, then turning north onto Purchase Street where it will end at the Cape Verdean American Veteran’s Memorial Hall. Now, that’s a parade! Look for Groundwork! members E for All Southcoast marching.
Moveable Art
SATURDAY, JULY 1 – Kinesis – Art in Movement opens tonight at Gallery X (169 William Street) at 5:00pm. “We are looking for artists to exhibit artwork that moves or gives the illusion of movement,” the Gallery wrote when announcing the show. So come prepared to shimmy and shake.
The Gospel of Jazz
SUNDAY, JULY 2 – The First Unitarian Church in New Bedford at Union and County Streets holds their annual jazz service today from 11:00am – 2:00pm. In addition to the big JC, Miles Davis and Chet Baker get resurrected, too! Musicians include: John Harrison – Piano; Dino Govoni – Tenor Sax; Geoffrey Whyte – Drums; Ron Mahdi -Bass; Dori Rubbicco – Vocals; Danny Schwartz – Percussion; and Doug Olsen – Trumpet. Join them for refreshments in the Parish House after the service.

TUESDAY, JULY 4 – New Bedford celebrates the birth of the nation by shooting off fireworks in every neighborhood. But, only the fireworks over the harbor are legal – so beat it down to quayside at the State Pier to enjoy the kabooms legally. There are two ways to celebrate this year: we’ve either Made America Great Again!, or, survived the first 6 months of the Resistance…depending on your point of view. Either way, expect a big bang.
Frederick Douglass is doing great
THURSDAY, JULY 6 – Everett Hoagland will lead volunteers in a community reading of the 1852 speech, “What to the Slave is the fourth of July?” by Frederick Douglass tonight from 7:00 – 8:30pm in historic Seamen’s Bethel (15 Johnny Cake Hill, NB). If you’re interested in participating in “Reading Douglass in the Age of Trump,” contact the New Bedford Historical Society at 508-979-8828. They will send a copy of the speech and assign you a passage to read during this free, family-friendly event.
