The Blues, brunch and more…YOUR WEEKEND

The Romanovs Return (?)

ONGOING through Sunday, Jan. 21 – Russia ruling family was murdered by the Bolsheviks a hundred years ago this year – or were they? Years later, a woman turned up in a Berlin asylum claiming to be Anastasia – the daughter of Czar Nicholas II who had escaped the execution. And – an international mystery and legend were born. Plus, a great movie and play! The play “Anastasia” is Your Theatre, Inc.’s latest offering, opening on Thurs. Jan. 11 and continuing through Sunday, Jan. 21. Check out their website for all performances and to get tickets.

Rt. 18 at the lanes

Tonight, local favorites Rt. 18 make some noise starting at 9:00 p.m. playing your favorite ‘80s, ‘90s Top 40, Dance, Alternative and Country music.

Author talk

SATURDAY, JAN. 13 – It’s a painful chapter in the city’s history – but evil sometimes must be confronted if not exposed. Author Maureen Boyle does just that in her book, Shallow Graves: The Hunt for the New Bedford Highway Serial Killer. That killer stalked vulnerable women in the city back in the 1980s, when Boyle was a reporter for The Standard-Times. This afternoon from 3:00-4:00 p.m., she’ll discuss her book and that time at an Author Talk presented by the New Bedford Free Public Library downtown at 618 Pleasant Street.

The Blues

SATURDAY, JAN. 14 – Doug’s House of Harmony at 818 Kempton Street, about a block east of Rockdale Avenue, is a newish addition to the city’s nightclub scene that is hosting some interesting acts. Tonight, come check out “The Blues with Professor Harp” from 9:00-midnight and discover this nice, neighborhood pub with a great sound.

Ladies who brunch

SUNDAY, JAN. 14 – Incognito club and eatery (1606-10 Acushnet Avenue, NB) puts some sizzle into Sunday with another one of their popular Drag Brunches today from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. On the menu are fierce femmes and eggs. Performing for you will be the queens of Providence: Jacqueline DiMera, La Diva Jonz and Vi’let. Tix for brunch and show are $20 per person. Call 508-993-3933 for reservations.
