VOTE for YOUR WEEKEND

standing_rockSATURDAY, NOV. 5 – SouthCoast Stands With Standing Rock today from noon – 2:00 p.m. at the New Bedford Free Public Library downtown. Given the week’s news from North Dakota, New Bedford’s own Erik Andrade has swung into action and planned the following: This informational presentation is on the Standing Rock Sioux Tribes’ fight to protect the water supply of not just their reservation but also the 18 million others who depend on it, and which would be threatened by any potential leak of the proposed Dakota Access Pipeline. The goal of the meeting is to raise awareness about the situation at Standing Rock, inspire activism and donations for the cause, and recruit folks willing to go out to Standing Rock Reservation in a show of solidarity. Find out more and follow the journey via the Facebook event page here.

SATURDAY, NOV. 5 – Go back in time to a Prohibition Speakeasy – 1920s attire is optional but could be fun! Why? Because you’ll be celebrating 35 years of Spinner Publications today from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Fort Taber Community Center. The celebration doubles as their annual fundraiser – and it’s a pretty good deal. $75 gets you an open bar, food by M & C Cafe, music by the Meadowlarks and the opportunity to bid on fine art by Milt Brightman, John Gamache, Alison Wells, Peter Martin and Jim Sears during a silent auction. But the best part of the entire swanky, jazz-tinged affair is that you’ll be supporting Spinner – the city and region’s premier publisher of local history. Groundwork! has been proud to host them at our two New Bedford Book Festivals – and can’t wait to to so again when A Picture History of New Bedford, Vol. 3 is published. You can order tickets to Spinner Publications celebrates 35 years by phone at 508-994-4564 or online at www.spinnerpub.com.

SATURDAY, NOV. 5 – Alison Wells Fine Art Gallery holds an opening reception for what promises to be a doozy of a show from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. today. The Photo Exhibit will feature Richard Gormley, Andrew Kepinski and a personal favorite – award-winning photo-journalist Peter Pereira. Most readers are probably familiar with Peter’s work in The Standard-Times – although it is often plucked from its pages and printed in publications world-wide after being seen by the wire services. It’s especially nice to pick up The New York Times and see a Peter Pereira photo in the Gray Lady. That’s mostly due to his talented eye. But, it also has a lot to do with the contagious enthusiasm he brings to his work and shares with readers almost every day in print and online. And now, at Alison Wells Gallery at 106 William Street, downtown New Bedford.

BONUS: TUESDAY, NOV. 8 – ELECTION DAY! Okay – whether you are with Hillary or a Trump supporter, there can be no debate about the following: This year’s presidential election will be historic. Either the nation will elect it’s first female Commander-in-Chief or a political neophyte who has never held elective office before. It’s unprecedented – and worthy of a school night out. Incognito bar and bistro at 1606-1610 Acushnet Avenue is holding an Election Night Party tonight beginning at 8:00 p.m. They’re planning drink specials, $2 tacos (Would Trump approve…?) and Karaoke until 1:00 a.m. (that sounds like something up Hillary’s alley). No matter your presidential preference, before you drink to the republic be sure to VOTE! And then down a gin and tonic with friends as you contemplate the consequences of feeling Stronger Together or going Brexit in America.
