Your Theatre is Never The Sinner

THROUGH SUNDAY, JAN. 22 – Your Theatre’s latest production is dark and intense – or in other words, great theatre! The fact that it’s based on a true story and done in the round just adds dramatic effect to what was once called “The Crime of the Century.” Set in 1924, “Never the Sinner” puts two handsome but twisted college students, Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, accused of murdering 14-year-old Bobby Franks, on trial. “This thrilling 95 minute courtroom drama by John Logan (‘The Last Ship’ and Tony Award winner for ‘Red’ on Broadway) explores a complex and twisted relationship between two young men in search of passion, intellect, and the perfect crime,” Your Theatre tells us – and we believe them. After all, they’ve been thrilling audiences for 70 seasons or so! Get tickets and see complete performance schedule here.

The New Bedford Feminist Reading Group

SATURDAY, JAN. 14 – It got called last week because of snow – but you can’t keep a good reading group down! If you didn’t read it here, then be aware now: Groundwork! is pleased and happy to host the inaugural (for sure this time; no snow forecast!) meeting of The New Bedford Feminist Reading Group this afternoon at 3:00 pm. It’s the brainchild of performance artist Andy Anello and yours truly will be on hand today to welcome guests to 1213 Purchase Street. Yes – it’s all-gender and all are welcome.

Jazz Brunch

SUNDAY, JAN. 15 – Jazz Brunch continues at Greasy Luck Brewery (791 Purchase Street) with Joaquin Santos and friends (Santos gets the drums while Marcus Monteiro is on Sax, Marcus Tavares handles Vocals, Yuki Kanesaka tickles the Keys and Tyrone Cameron goes deep Bass.) $25 gets you the tunes and the Banana Bread French toast (plus a whole lot more). Make Sunday a Funday in downtown New Bedford. Get tickets here.

Remembering/Celebrating MLK

SUNDAY, JAN. 15 – Pilgrim United Church of Christ (635 Purchase Street) invites all to remember and celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. today at a special event from 4:00pm – 5:30pm. The theme for this year’s remembrance/celebration is “# MLK Then and Now- Words for a new generation” and features an impressive line-up of young community leaders.

BONUS: Back in the saddle

TUESDAY, JAN 17 – “Country is back!” the poster states – and line dancing with it. Pull on your cowboy boots and get over to Poirier Post VFW on the corner of Appleton St. and Ashley Blvd. in New Bedford’s north end tonight for some country line dancing from 6:00-9:00pm. Beginner lessons start at 6:00pm and continue thru 7:30pm. Then from 7:30-9:00, class continues for “beyond beginners/intermediate” dancers. “We hope to see y’all there and PLEASE, feel free to bring your friends!” they write. $5 gets you in the door.
