Why Coworking is Good for your Business

coworking-is-good-for-business

We’re so excited about launching Groundwork! because we believe it will be a catalyst to a healthy local economy in New Bedford. What exactly does that mean? We want creative and hard-working people to have a place where they can get inspiration and support to launch their own business.

Let’s be honest, starting a business is daunting: Should I be an LLC or S Corp? Do I need insurance? Should I take out a loan or seek investors? How the hell to I market myself? File taxes?

Many of us creative types are terrified of such questions!

Dena and I are not MBAs by any stretch of the imagination. And while I do have management experience under my belt, I was working in Argentina where the laws and loopholes are logic-defying compared to what we have here in Massachusetts.

We knew we would need help to make Groundwork! a success. We reached out to fellow coworking spaces, and found an incredible amount of information on the web, including a coworking wiki, and Google group. Then we started visiting spaces. Our first field trip to the Hive in RI turned out to be fortuitous: our friends at the Hive introduced us to New Economy CPA and Jeff Alain, who answered all of our burning accounting questions and also happens to be a graduate of New Bedford High. Jeff works at a coworking space in Providence called the Founders League, so we knew he would understand the unique needs of our business. And it turns out that Jeff knows an attorney who also works at the Founders League, and that’s how we got connected with Ted Howell for our legal questions.

The most important part of starting a business is to work with people who are experts in their respective fields, but who also share similar values and care about what you are trying to do. By plugging into the magic of coworking, we’ve scored a killer support team for Groundwork!

As we meet potential Groundwork! members, I continue to be surprised and impressed by the diverse industries and backgrounds who want to work with us. I have no doubt that we will become a powerful and diverse network of professionals ready to launch new and creative ideas into the stratosphere. If you’ve ever dreamt of taking the leap and doing your own thing, we’re creating the place where you can do it.

And if you don’t live in the New Bedford area, I encourage you to connect with your local coworking community. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Hi Sarah, I’ve found hundreds of resources for accounting, corporate governance, marketing and tax preparation, but very few for sales. Will sales specialists be part of your coworking community? Thanks and good luck!

Hi Marcia, we don’t know yet but we have had some interest from folks working in sales in the tech industry. We’re planning on posting member profiles on our website soon!
