SATURDAY, OCT. 29 – Some of New Bedford’s proudest history isn’t found in its Whaling City heritage but its connection to the Abolitionist movement. That history will be discussed at the New Bedford Free Public Library today from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. when historian Manisha Sinha will talk about her recently published book, The Slave’s Cause: A History of Abolition. Writing in the Boston Globe, reviewer Matthew Price says, ” Though associated with the years just before he Civil War, abolitionisms’s roots lie deep in the 18th century. Quakers and others spoke out against slavery, however Sinha stresses that Black people were at the center of the movement from the onset.” Copies of the book will be on sale. And hey – ‘The Slave’s Cause’ is shortlisted for the National Book Award in Nonfiction. The reading is brought to us by the New Bedford Historical Society; find out more about them here.

SATURDAY, OCT. 29 – Groundwork! has been pleased to host Mastermind Adventures in our space from time to time over the last year for various events. Though the fun start-up company now calls Swansea home, we still feel a connection with it and love telling people about what’s happening with them. Tonight they’re calling all 18+ singles to their home at 262 Swansea Mall Drive 2, doors down from Old Navy, for a “You Can Talk Nerdy To Me” meetup. They write, “Are you looking for other like-minded people for hangouts, game meetups, dates or just friendship? Come to our Talk Nerdy To Me meetup and we will have a host of short conversation and game activities for you (kind of like nerdy speed dating, but not necessarily romantic). You can indicate what kind of connection you are looking for: Friends only, interested in women, interested in men, interested in game enthusiasts, interested in literature – it’s up to you! All are welcome for this fun way to meet others in the area (18+).” Good news for geeks, freaks and nerds – this is a recurring monthly event on the last Saturday night of the month! Oh, man…I may get a date yet…Check out Mastermind Adventures on Facebook here. You can start talking nerdy at 6:00 p.m. ….

SATURDAY, OCT. 29 – Can’t let your Halloween weekend pass by without one costume contest. Cruise down Acushnet Avenue in New Bedford’s north end tonight and step out at the bistro and lounge Incognito for their annual party. They’re serving dinner from 5:00 – 10:00 pm followed with music and dancing till 2:00 a.m. Featuring the sounds of DJ Adam DeMelo – and chef Eddy Yedlin of the late, lamented Pier 37 in the kitchen. Incognito can be found at 1606-1610 Acushnet Ave, New Bedford and on Facebook here.
