YOUR WEEKEND: Upper William St Fest, Lunar Teeth, Drag Brunch and Reggae on the Beach
Some big events happening this weekend to welcome in autumn, so let’s get right to it…
On SATURDAY, SEPT. 24 there’s no where else to be but the UPPER WILLIAM STREET FESTIVAL in downtown New Bedford. The festival itself promises to be a sprawling, street-side extravaganza of music, art, artisans and more. It’s boundaries are defined by some of the impressive churches that distinguish New Bedford’s architectural legacy – The First Unitarian Church at Union and Eighth Street; Gallery X, which was the former First Universalist Church at 169 William Street; and the First Baptist Church at the corner of William and Seventh Streets. It’s also a testament to the vision and energy of Gallery X’s founder, Charles Hauck, who has spent a busy year putting this first UPPER WILLIAM STREET FESTIVAL together with a great team of supporters. SATURDAY, SEPT. 24 – What about Saturday night, you ask? Got you covered. The autumnal edition of the quarterly performance art event LUNAR TEETH happens at The Ropeworks, 123 Sawyer Street, in New Bedford’s north end. We love founder Andy Anello’s concept for Lunar Teeth. “It is a place to try out new ideas that challenge traditional genres,” he writes. Tonight’s line-up of performers are Laura Ryan and Mitch Lafrance, and we can always hope that Andy himself has a performance piece in him. LUNAR TEETH starts at 7:00 p.m. and lasts for about an hour but you are welcome to BYOB and hang-out; it’s that type of vibe. The Ropeworks is one of New Bedford’s coolest addresses – an artist condo building created with vision and passion. Check out some past Lunar Teeth performances here before you go.
SUNDAY, SEPT. 25 – Groundwork! and Civic Support love holding monthly Business Buzz events at Pier 37 – an atmospheric bar and bistro on one of New Bedford’s most beautiful blocks at lower Union Street. Once a month, Pier 37 does something else. It holds a monthly DRAG BRUNCH and it happens again today beginning at 11:00 p.m. It’s not just Bloody Marys and chow – it’s a party! “Join Jacqueline DiMera, LaDiva Jonz and Vi’let for Drag Brunch. They make their way from Providence, RI to New Bedford, MA on a Sunday morning just for all of you. Stop in, enjoy the show along with some Mimosas, Bloody Marys and our signature Fish Bowls. SUNDAY, SEPT. 25 – New Bedford’s beaches are sometimes overlooked as an important city asset. That’s not the case today as another first debuts. The first REGGAE ON WEST BEACH concert in New Bedford’s south end kicks-off at 2:00 p.m. and lasts until 6:00 p.m. From their FB event page: Come join your friends at the first edition of Reggae On West Beach featuring live DJs Ranking Z and Rebel International of LIT Radio, spinning the best in Roots, Rocksteady, and Early Dancehall. Music will be under the Pavilion on West Beach across from Hazelwood Park on W. Rodney French Blvd. Bring a friend, pack a picnic, groove on the beach, and enjoy the vibes! Family-friendly and FREE!
