Shop Local in the South Coast this Holiday Season

It’s almost that time of year! Thanksgiving is around the corner and so is Black Friday: the official start of the holiday shopping season. While Black Friday will be wrought with headlines of blockbuster deals from corporations like Best Buy and Macy’s, we wanted to shed some light on the best local places to buy unique gifts for your loved ones. As the old saying goes “It’s better to give than to receive,” so this holiday season while you’re thinking about what to give your loved ones, give the gift of commerce to some of the awesome local shops in and around New Bedford!

Give the gift of fashion

Clothing is a funny one! Some people are excited to receive clothes and others… not so much. But for those who enjoy fashion, New Bedford has an impressive amount of local brands and shops to help you give the gift of style!

Solstice | 801 Purchase Street

Solstice is your one-stop shop for urban street wear and skateboarding accessories. Home of the famous NBMA harpoon logo, Solstice has a great selection of sweatshirts, hats, stickers, shoes and skateboards.

Calico | 173 Union Street

Located Downtown, Calico is the premiere spot for your niece or best friend with a killer sense of fashion! Calico is full of fun and flirty clothes sure to excite any woman with an eye for style.

Circa | 204 Court Street

Circa is a self-described spot for “Fashion Archaeology.” This esoteric spot is near downtown and offers a wide range of vintage and unique clothing and accessories. I bought a jacket there the other day that is actually from the early 70’s!

Longevity Co.

Longevity Co. is a local clothing start-up that makes awesome streetwear. While they don’t have a physical storefront their website is linked above. They press all their clothes locally and are run by locals.F

For the foodies on your list…

Once everyone has digested their Thanksgiving turkey and Christmas hams, they’re going to be hungry again! After all that cooking, wouldn’t it be nice to go out to eat? Give the gift of not cooking with gift cards to local restaurants. Luckily New Bedford is full of more awesome restaurants than we are able to list, but here are a few!

DNB Burgers | 22 Elm Street

Who doesn’t like burgers!? DNB Burgers offers handcrafted artisan burgers, hand-cut fries, and poutine. The perfect place to get a gift card for your favorite carnivore.

Juice’d Cafe | 984 Kempton Street

Now that you’ve got your carnivore covered, let’s find something for the healthy eater! Juice’d Cafe is New Bedford and Fall River’s premier place for healthy smoothies, bowls and wraps.

The Black Whale | 106 MacArthur Ave

We would be doing you a disservice to not bring up seafood! The Black Whale is a classy place right on the water to get littlenecks, lobster, oysters and any other kind of seafood you can think.

GotChew

Can’t decide on a restaurant for your loved ones? Why not all of them! GotChew is a local start-up based downtown which offers app-based food delivery for over 55 New Bedford Restaurants (including all the ones mentioned above). Give the gift of choice this year with GotChew!

For homeowners and pet lovers…

Okay, so food and clothes may not be exactly what you’re looking for to cover all your gifts. Maybe some candles? Some decor? Thankfully New Bedford is home to everything you may be looking for!

Dartmoor Gifts | 201 Horseneck Road (Dartmouth)

While this may be a bit of a drive outside the city limits, it is definitely worth it! Dartmoor Gifts is full of home decor for both indoors and outdoors. From wind chimes and birdhouses to wall ornaments and statues, you’re sure to find something special at Dartmoor Gifts.

WOOF! WOOF! | 255 Union Street

In the rush to get all our favorite humans gifts, let’s not forget about our furry friends. Our pets deserve the best and WOOF! WOOF! is certainly that. This pet boutique has healthy and delicious treats, stylish accessories and super fun toys. Show your favorite animals the spirit of giving at WOOF! WOOF! this holiday season.

Know anyone who works at home?

A gift card to Groundwork is the perfect antidote to winter loneliness. If you know anyone who works remotely or independently, consider giving them the gift of coworking this year.
